Stigmata presents conservative self-sabotage as a tragic and contradictory reality of a place often considered to be 'too far gone'. Through alternating essays and Southern Gothic-inspired stories, I present the ghosts of the past as tangible influences on our day-to-day lives; subconscious feelings, invisible acts of oppression, and hauntings of the land as mutable, tangible beings.
We are all capable of communing with the dead: the victims and perpetrators of our present reality. By understanding them— by heeding the ghosts calling to us from the dark recesses of our consciences, we have the opportunity to do better; to create fewer and fewer ghosts for our children to contend with. It is no easy task, but we must do it anyways. Because if a ghost is calling your name, it is because you are able, in any number of large or small ways, to ease its suffering.
